Senior Policy Research Analyst
Energetic, creative and committed, Jess brings an understanding of research and practice to her work at SERVE through her public policy training and past life as a teacher. She currently represents SERVE on the management team of the North Carolina Race to the Top evaluation, as well as a policy research analyst at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI). Jess’ work in education has spanned over ten years, and has been motivated by her belief that all children deserve a high quality education.
Jess started at SERVE in July, 2011 as SERVE’s state liaison to North Carolina. She provided technical assistance and quick turnaround research to DPI leadership and practitioners on topics ranging from reading achievement to extended learning opportunities.
Before coming to SERVE, Jess worked as a Research Specialist at CNA Education in Alexandria, Virginia under the Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Appalachia contract. While there, she worked on the communications team to translate research for non-academic audiences, created and coordinated research to practice events for practitioners, and managed the REL’s Governing Board. Before working at CNA, Jess was a reading teacher and an ESL teacher in the U.S. and rural Japan.
Jess holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Northeastern University and a Masters in Public Policy from Duke University.
When Jess is not bouncing between Greensboro, Durham and Raleigh for work, she enjoys reading, movies, tennis, volunteering, and spending time with her husband and dog.
